This Oscar-winning documentary chronicles Navy Adm. Richard Byrd's perilous 1946-47 Antarctic expedition. Goals for "Operation Highjump" included exploring unmapped territory and evaluating military troops' ability to perform in the harsh frozen environment. Film footage was shot by photographers from all branches of the U.S. military, and actors Robert Montgomery, Robert Taylor and Van Heflin -- all commissioned naval officers -- narrate.
